You Can’t Please Everyone
In every job I’ve had I’ve always encountered gossip. It doesn’t matter how hard you work or how motivated you are. If someone doesn’t like something about you or the way you look they will complain behind your back. I admit I may ask a ton of questions when I start a job but I do it for the sake of understanding a companies system. I also admit I may not be the most visually appealing person (think 30 something geek appearance and balding).
Shallow people will make assumptions about me when they have really no clue what they are talking about. I have worked at several Fortune 500 companies as well as smaller companies and have never encountered the same challenges on the job. I do not know everything. I suspect most companies would prefer to have a young good looking group (full head of hair, and fit) group of tech savy individuals.
I think the best thing to do is generally keep to yourself but be friendly and hard working. Don’t worry about what anybody thinks but those that supervise you. Look out for your own interests and please be ready to back up false accusations about yourself.
