Technology Workers Are Not Slave Labor
One of my biggest pet peeves (if not the only major one) is that companies always seem to think workers are slaves. Companies seem to expect everyone to willingly work for 40+ hours and only be paid for 40.
When I was working at a large bank in Charlotte my coworkers regularly worked 50/60+ hours a week and were only compensated for 40. A coworker that asked about overtime pay was told to just work less on Friday. This was pure bs. What happens if you work more than 8 hours extra? The company would not like you taking a day+ off.
This goes even to the companies that treat there employees and consultants well. Companies believe if they are paying you a good pay rate (what’s good is relative) that they can scare you (like loosing your gig if your a consultant ) if you don’t work more than 40.
It’s just the same old bs everywhere I work with a different spin on it. I’ve almost thought about having a 5 year plan to get out of it. Seriously it’s just plan aggravating as hell sometimes. I’d rather work for myself 50-60+ hours on my own tech projects. At least I’d be home and the stress would far less.
