Why Polices Exist!
I had a interesting day before my trip to San Francisco at work which gave me yet another great idea for a discussion. I was attempting to troubleshoot a very annoying issue. This had been causing a ridiculous amount of error email messages to be sent out. I was unable to successfully troubleshoot the issue and had to discuss this issue with the business.
Attempting to be the best developer that I can be I had no choice but to mention my vacation and desire to resolve the issue . I had a conversation with the end user of the app and she said “Why Didn’t I Ask Her?”. Simple, for a good reason. At my company it’s a policy that your immediate supervisor has to approve vacation time.
Polices exist at companies to establish order and protect the interests of the company and employee. I followed my employers policy and asked for vacation time well over 1 month in advance since I knew the concert I wanted to attend and had to book my trip. If the business users had to approve vacation time no vacation time would ever get approved for anybody. This goes hand and hand with the business continually to try to overstep there bounds and attempt to do things they don’t have control over.
In the future I will continue to do things in a similar fashion and have my boss approve all vacation time without mentioning it to the business unless need dictates . If you always follow and do things by your companies polices you will minimize your difficulties.
